CD Review: Sonia V: a thing or 2
Bridefans Crankin Christian Metal
I think I'm coining a new phrase for the type of rock Sonia
plays - as I've never heard the term before (and if this
term has been used before, then oh well) - Chick Rock
This Detroit native has a Motor City style all her own. From
the opening track, Superstar, you know this chick is here to
rock your socks off!! The second track, A Thing or 2, while
not as heavy as Superstar is still a good rock song. You can
detect some Belinda Carlisle (ex-GoGo's) influence along
side some Gwen Stefani/No Doubt and some early Pat Benatar
in her music. The third track, Tell Me, is in the same vein
as the title track, but has a lil more edge to it.
While having Sonia's roots in Christian music, this CD isn't
your typical Christian release. It's not overtly preachy or
have a lot of Christian references, but yet she does manage
to stick in references about her faith and what she does
believe into her lyrics.
Production on this CD is top notch for an Indie project. If
only all Indie bands could get this kind of production
quality for their projects. It's not over-produced, slicked
up, tons of reverb or vocal effects mixed it. Just pure raw
musical talent.
In regards to the song Superstar, it's a tongue-in-cheek
song that takes a few pot-shots at the media and
musical/movie industry. I find this a little refreshing as
Sonia's out to break the rules and what better place to
start?
